CHAPTER 10

Evelyn played her last card with a snap, winning the trick and the round.

“Again, Miss Wayford?” Mrs. Young laughed, setting down her remaining cards. “That’s four times in a row she’s beat us, Mr. Marshall.”

Gilbert looked at her with a mix of admiration and suspicion. “Indeed it is. One must wonder if our dear Evelyn has discovered a way to cheat us all blind.”

Evelyn stifled her urge to comment on his use of the word “blind.” “It is good we are not gambling then, is it not?” Evelyn asked cheekily, gathering up her cards. It had been purely luck that was on her side, but she would enjoy the fortune while it lasted. “Another round? Or shall we try something else? We’ve not yet played snapdragon or The Doctor.”

“Oh, may we play The Doctor?” Sarah asked. She smiled timidly. “I used to play that game at home.”

“Of course,” Evelyn said. “Would you like to be the first doctor?”

Sarah blushed. “No thank you, miss. I’d rather not.”

“Very well.” She turned to Gilbert with a grin as she stood. “Gilbert can be the first doctor, as it was his idea in the first place.”

Gilbert stood as well, looking down on her with a little smirk. “Very well, Miss Wayford. I hope nothing too serious ails you.”

They gathered the other servants together and moved chairs about to form a circle. Gilbert stood in the middle, his hands crossed behind his back. “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I am your doctor, Dr. Marshall.” He flung one arm out, bowing low. He straightened, look around at each of them with marked pity. “It is my understanding that you are all gathered here today to receive remedies for your various ailments. Please pay attention.”

Evelyn could not hold back her smile at his theatrics. She had never seen him like this, and she found it rather adorable. He moved toward his valet first, who held out his wrist grudgingly. Gilbert pretended to take his pulse, tsking to himself.

“What seems to be the problem, good sir?”

“I’ve a pain in my foot,” Barnet answered.

“Ah for that, you will want to hop up and down on it twenty times, thrice daily.” Gilbert gave him a serious look, then moved on.

Clyde sat beside Barnet, his large arms folded across his chest, but Gilbert was not intimidated.

“Your wrist please, sir. I must have your pulse.”

Clyde held his wrist out and Gilbert laid two fingers lightly on it.

“A very healthy pulse sir. What is your disorder?”

“I suppose I have a headache.”

Gilbert nodded seriously. “For a headache, I recommend a spoonful of cinnamon. Or two if it is a large headache.”

Evelyn was next and she held out her wrist obediently for Gilbert. He wrapped his warm fingers carefully around it, keeping steady eye contact with her, a smile teasing his lips. To her horror, her heart began to beat faster. As it did, Gilbert’s smile grew.

“Ah, Miss Wayford, there is no need to tell me your ailment. I can deduce it all on my own.
